Pessimistic teenagers have a difficult time. They are most likely to develop depression, eating disorders, and just general malaise. This kind of attitude can negatively affect teenagers for the rest of their lives, if they aren’t careful. Pessimism is a habit, just like any other habit. Therefore, with a little bit of effort teens can change these attitudes. However, if you are a pessimistic teen, these words probably won’t resonate truly with you. Instead, you will want to know more about pessimism. So, I will aim to please here, but not without its cautions.
Below, I will outline some of the reasons why being a pessimist is not recommended for a truly fulfilled and content life. I’m sure that you’ll be able to relate to some of these reasons if you are a pessimist.
1. Pessimists are always hypercritical of themselves and others. The teen years can be a hypercritical time anyway. However, if you are a pessimist, you are extra critical of everything and everyone. You look for things to be wrong and bad. And chances are that this attitude can become a self-fulfilling prophecy because such an attitude can taint every experience that you have.
2. Pessimists always find fault with everything and everyone. Pessimists can’t neutrally really look at anyone and not think that there is something wrong with the person or situation. This can really be damaging to a teenager’s overall attitude and can infect each of her experiences.
3. Sometimes, pessimists look for reasons to feel bad. Pessimism is like a foul stench in many ways. Once you get a wiff of it, it is hard to get rid of it. There is something really awful about searching for the bad and wrong in everything. Most things are simply neutral. And when you look for the negative in everything, you tend to exaggerate everything in favour of that negative emotion, poisoning even the best of experiences. This can lead to a lot of unhappiness.
4. Pessimists have a difficult time enjoying anything, even things that are under their control. Pessimists don’t think that they should enjoy anything. First of all they’re not used to seeing the good and positive in anything. But, second, they will find something wrong with even the nicest of experiences. This can really put a damper on any kind of happiness that you can feel. Life should be for enjoying not for criticizing. Most situations and individuals simply are as they are. When you realize this, you’ll be able to enjoy things a lot more fully without trying to criticize or negate anything. You will simply appreciate what’s in front of you. When you do, you will know that you have conquered pessimism. Only then can life return to its wonderful and treasured state.
